A few months ago during the credit crunch, when financial institutions were falling over like dominoes one of the worst hit companies was AIG. They currently sponsor Man Utds shirts. Because of the downturn taking its toll they have needed assistance from the US Government to be able to keep trading.
As a result, they have no more money to be splashing out on European Football sponsorships, so they have announced today that the deal will come to an end in 2010.
Indian Company Sahara have been quick to confirm they are interested and have contacted Man Utd with a view to making an offer.
AIG have been paying £19m per year for the shirt deal, so the replacement company will likely need to improve on that. What with the European and Club World Cups sparking away in the Old Trafford Trophy Cabinet, Man Utd will probably not be too worried about offers coming in.
